GOOD QUESTION
Dear Parishioners and Friends,
There are no stupid questions. How many times have we heard a teacher tell us that? Questions are good. They engage us. They make us think. They stretch our imagination. No wonder Jesus uses questions in his ministry nearly as much as he uses parables (“What is a parable?” some of you might be asking. Good question. A parable is a short story with a powerful message - i.e. the Good Samaritan, the Prodigal Son.)
In today’s passage from the first chapter of John’s, we get two questions, both of them, as the saying goes, are “loaded.” Jesus asks the first to two early disciples: “What are you looking for?” It reminds us of the question God asks the first man and woman on the earth, “Where are you?” The God who searches for us knows that deep within each human person there is a question, a longing, a hungering.
After Jesus asks his question, the two disciples throw one of their own back at him: “Teacher, where are you staying?” At first glance, it could sound like a “stupid question,” a bit out of context and an inappropriate response to Jesus’ inquiry. On the other hand, upon a deeper look, maybe the answer to the second question will help us
answer the first.
Where does Jesus live? Where can the Spirit of God be found? Perhaps all of John’s Gospel will hope to answer this question. The God who lives deep within us is the God who will answer, fulfill and satisfy our deepest questions, longing and hungering.
Happy Questioning!
Fr. Rich
