Prayers:

Your Child should know:

  • Our Father, Hail Mary, Glory Be, Meal Time Prayer, Act of Contrition, Sign of the Cross.

Sacraments:

Your child should know:

  • A sacrament is an outward sign instituted by Christ to give grace.
  • The Seven Sacraments are: Baptism, Reconciliation, Eucharist, Confirmation, Matrimony, Holy Orders, Anointing of the Sick
  • Sacraments of Initiation are: Baptism, Eucharist and Confirmation
  • Sacraments of Healing are: Reconciliation and Anointing of the Sick
  • Sacraments of Service are: Matrimony and Holy Orders

Baptism – It is the sacrament in which we are freed from original sin and become children of God.  We are also welcomed into the Church.

Reconciliation – The Sacrament by which our relationship with God and the Church is strengthened or restored and our sins are forgiven.

Eucharist – The Sacrament of the Body and Blood of Christ, Jesus is truly present (body, soul, and divinity) under the appearances of bread and wine.

Confirmation – It is the Sacrament in which we receive the Gift of the Holy Spirit in a special way.

Matrimony – The Sacrament in which a man and woman become husband and wife and promise to be faithful to each other for the rest of their lives.

Holy Orders – The Sacrament of Holy Orders is in which baptized men are ordained to serve the Church as Bishops, Priests and Deacons.

Anointing of The Sick – The Sacrament by which God’s grace and comfort are given to those who are seriously ill.

Ten Commandments:

Your child should know:

  1. I am the Lord your God, you shall not have strange gods before me.
  2. You shall not take the name of the Lord your God in vain.
  3. Remember to keep holy the Lord’s Day.
  4. Honor your mother and father
  5. You shall not kill

Liturgical Year

Your child should know:

The Liturgical year begins on the 1st Sunday of Advent

Advent is when we prepare to celebrate Christ’s coming at Christmas

Lent is when we prepare to celebrate Jesus rising from the dead on Easter

Lent begins on Ash Wednesday and end with the celebration of the Lord’s Supper on Holy Thursday.

Good Friday is the day that Jesus was crucified

Holy Thursday, Good Friday and Holy Saturday are the days we call the Easter Triduum.

Easter is when Jesus rose from the dead.  His Resurrection

Pentecost is 50 days after Easter.   Holy Spirit descended on the Apostles in the form of tongues of fire.

The Four Marks of the Church:

One, Holy, Catholic and Apostolic

We hear these when we say the Nicene Creed at Mass

Hail Mary full of grace the Lord is with you,

Blessed are you among women and blessed is the fruit of thy womb Jesus,

Holy Mary mother of God, pray for us sinners now and at the hour of our death.  Amen
